Going to a spa is a wonderfully relaxing experience, but for many of us, it’s a luxury that we can’t afford. So, what can you do instead? You could have your very own spa day at home, which is a great form of self-care.
The downside to this is many at-home spa products are packaged in plastic or made from polyester, contain harmful ingredients, and are not produced ethically.
However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t still have an enjoyable spa-like experience at home; it just means you need to make a few adjustments to make it sustainable.
How To Have an Eco Friendly Spa Day at Home

1. Use What You Already Have
The truth is you don’t need to buy lots of different products; there are plenty of items that you already have around the house that you can use. Set the mood with good lighting, put on some relaxing music, wear your favourite robe or dressing gown, and use up leftover skincare products.
2. Choose Sustainable Candles
When choosing the perfect candles for that spa-like experience, avoid paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum, which is associated with eye, skin and lung irritation. Many candles also contain synthetic fragrances that can release harmful chemicals when burned. To avoid any issues, look for candles made with coconut wax, soy or beeswax. These waxes are better for your health and the environment. This lavender, bergamot and marjoram candle * is made with soy wax and a blend of essential oils, with an average burn time of 25 hours. The lavender essential oil helps to promote calm and relaxation, which is perfect for your at-home spa experience.
3. Make Use of Essential Oils
Essential oils are naturally occurring and plant-based, so they are far better for your health. I recommend adding lavender oil to your at-home spa because it can help to reduce stress and prepare you for a good night’s sleep. This 10ml lavender oil * is 100% pure and safe to breathe in. You can add a few drops to your bath water for a nice aroma or rub a couple drops on to your wrists and temples to help you relax. Alternatively, combine the oil with a wooden massage roller * to remove tension and lumps around the neck and shoulder area.
4. Use Wheat Bags
Everyone knows that heat is great for relaxation and pain relief. Hot baths are great, but another great option are wheat bags. Unlike hot water bottles which are made with plastic, wheat bags are made sustainably, using cotton bags with a wheat grain filling. How it works is you heat the wheat bag up in the microwave for the recommended time and you apply it on any area of your body where you experience pain or discomfort. Common areas are the neck, shoulders and abdomen, but you can place it anywhere that you require warmth. You can add a couple of drops of your chosen essential oil to give it a nice aroma.
5. DIY Products
If you don’t have any spa products at home, don’t worry. It’s really easy to make your own DIY products. Here are some ideas:
- Make a DIY sugar face scrub with any oil of your choice and equal amounts of brown sugar
- Use tea bags on your eyes to help you relax and reduce puffiness
- Make a deep conditioning hair mask using 1 egg, 2 tablespoons of olive or coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of honey
- Open up your pores and clear your sinuses by filling up the sink with hot water and putting a towel over your head
- Make a simple face mask with 2 teaspoons of oil, 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 – 2 drops of essential oil
- Use the sugar scrub on your feet to remove tough skin and make them smooth
6. Use Leftover Products
Thinking about throwing out that wedge of lemon? Save it! Infuse it with some water, add a reusable straw and a couple of ice cubes and you have yourself a refreshing drink. Do you have some leftover face or hair mask? Don’t throw it away! Put it in a reusable container and reuse it another time. Sugar and oil scrubs will last a while, especially if it’s covered up. You can use it as a foot scrub, lip scrub or even use it on some stubborn stains, since the grittiness of sugar can help to remove staining.
